Nowadays, teaching is a
quite demanding profession that
requires quality teachers with great
intellectual and academic
ability, pedagogical knowledge, experience and
the capacity to
build good and multi-cultural relationships. However,
being a teacher now
as in the
future will demand
from us much
more than academic preparation.
Technology provides us
with a huge amount
of information that
needs to be
converted into useful
knowledge and skills. Soon,
the courseware phenomenon, that
is , the capacity to
create a standard
system to design
any kind of course,
cheap and easy
to use, supported
with texts, images,
videos, audio, interactive simulations and games; with
the possibility to use,
but also
participate with the
creation of new
ones, would be the
cause of great
changes that will happen
to students, teachers, schools, universities and educational
system.
Our lazy,
bored , uninterested students forced
to take specific
subjects will be
free to select
or even develop
the course for topics they are
more interested in.
School buildings will
be learning centers
open the whole
day, providing support
staff to assist
children and adults
on specific topics or
on the design
and creation of new
courseware. Teachers will
turn into courseware producers,
designers, enterprise owners
and tutors of
children needing help.
However, we cannot forget human
being’s nature and realize
that no one
can be educated
in isolation, and addiction
to technology is the
best way our
children and youth
find today to escape from reality
and to
construct barriers around
individuals. Learning , at least
in the early
stages, happen in a
social context. Children need to explore, observe, reflect,
conceptualize, apply and transform reality. They develop their thinking abilities by
interacting with others. Without others
it is impossible
to be aware
of the importance of
symbol systems, rules, values
and how
to solve problems. It
is through others
that you know
who you are, your
strengths and weaknesses ,
what you are
good at and
why are you
here. A facilitator,
guide, tutor or any other
name we would take
as teachers in
the future, is and
will be a person who
must enable his
students to think , to solve problems , to love and transform
themselves and others
with or without
technology.
“Human teachers can
only help the
great job that is
being done, as
servants help the
master. Doing so, they
will be witnesses
to the unfolding
of the human
soul and to
the rising of
a new man
who will not be
a victim
of events, but will
have the clarity
of vision to direct
and shape the
future of human
society”
Maria Montessori,(1870-1952)
