On teaching explicit grammar to children

CHILDREN DO NOT NEED GRAMMAR FOR LEARNING ENGLISH.

BY  Dorali Elvira Muñoz Sanchez.

Many years ago grammar was considered the base of knowledge. Behaviorism theory considered the necessities of employers, teachers and administrators. Nowadays the constructivist theory puts students as the starting point of the learning process.  Children do not need the grammar for learning English; they need interactive, creative and meaningful activities that help them to reach their objectives. Children need engagement teachers who want to change the concept of learning and view them as the most important part in all the process of knowledge.

Only when teachers became facilitators and promote the knowledge of our culture and the respect for the others' beliefs, and when the classroom is seen as a place for learning thought stories, plays, and talking about our way of thinking, the students will be motivated to learn. Grammar is important for learning a language, but we  teachers can include it as a way to know the world and as a way of expressing feelings in a free way, and not as a simple group of boring rules.
