STUDENTS CAN ALSO BE MOTORS OF LEARNING!

STUDENTS CAN ALSO BE MOTORS OF LEARNING! by Santiago  Argoti  Portilla

Most people could think that learning takes place only when a teacher-the person that masters information –transmits it to the student –the one who receives information from the teacher. But this can be not fully true, since the challenge of autonomous learning is becoming a real alternative to complement the learning process. It could teach students how to learn to learn. If this is true, there are some aspects that need to be considered.

One point in favor of autonomous learning is that it allows learners to determine the direction of their own learning. Apart from that, these individuals can make choices among a range of options regarding learning goals and also modify or adapt tasks and goals. Due to the fact that autonomy gives the learners freedom and transcendence, the learners can go beyond the classroom and link classroom learning to the real world.

On the other hand, it is necessary that the learners be convinced that to experience self-learning, responsibility plays an important role. Both, teachers and students must contribute to a favorable learning environment. It is important that teachers learn to give students more responsibilities and freedom to do the assigned tasks. Furthermore, confidence and respect for people’s pace, needs, and interests is essential to succeed in the challenge of giving learners the chance to learn to learn.

The future of learning acquisition might be, in an important percentage, in the learner itself!
